Fabio Staiano

  • Product designer: I design digital products, from idea to code.
  • Educator: today at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and ILAS.
  • Author: three editions of a book for Packt.

Tools change. The craft doesn’t.

Scroll and I’ll tell you how I got here, one interface at a time.

Tables.

The web I grew up on: nested tables, spacer.gif and Dreamweaver. My old site still had Fabbio in its keywords. I swear.

Web 2.0.

Then everything turned glossy: gel buttons, reflections, the word beta everywhere. I started working on the web in 2010 and learned fast that clients always want a bigger logo.

Flat design.

Then we stripped it all away: shadows, textures, sometimes even the buttons. From 2013 I was at Geko, first as a web designer, then as a partner. In 2016 I started teaching and found out that explaining a choice matters as much as making it.

Systems.

Interfaces became systems of components, tokens and variants. I attended the Apple Developer Academy, where I also studied front-end development, and wrote a book for Packt. Then two more editions, because tools change faster than books.

Machines.

Today AI gives you ten versions in a second. The craft is knowing which one holds up, and why. I try it first, on real projects and in the classroom, and I only teach what works.

About

I’m not a ninja.

Not an astronaut or a superhero either: my old site said so already. I’m a product designer and educator in Naples. Today I teach Web Design at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli (the Naples Academy of Fine Arts), where I graduated, and UI/UX Design at ILAS.

Before that I was a partner at the communication agency Geko. I attended the Apple Developer Academy, where I studied design and front-end development, then led a team as project manager in its Pier programme. As a Figma Community Advocate I co-organise the Friends of Figma meetups in Naples. Today I bring AI into the way we design and build interfaces, and I always try it before I teach it.
